Exchange features
Gate.io has made several improvements compared to its competitors. Some things turned out better, some worse. These include:
- Low commissions. The fees charged by the platform are average among other similar exchanges. A 0.2% fee applies to trading operations. As for withdrawals, the commission is calculated individually for each token.
- Charts, trading history, and other useful features. However, the interface is not perfect; in some places, it is complicated, and it can be difficult to find a feature the first time, even if you have experience working with crypto exchanges.
- Multilingualism. The interface supports 17 languages. Russian is rather poor, and often the text does not fit into the blocks intended for it. However, English is quite adequate, and it is clear what all the functional elements are for.
- Customer support. There is an FAQ and a detailed user guide to help you solve potential problems. If this does not help, you need to create a support ticket. You can also contact support via Telegram or Twitter. However, on foreign resources that evaluate the quality of support, Gate.io’s rating does not rise above 3/5. We can conclude that not all issues can be resolved easily.
- Security. This is the aspect that developers pay the most attention to. Client funds are stored in both hot and cold cryptocurrency wallets. Clients are advised to undergo verification in accordance with the KYC system. Accounts are protected by two-factor authentication and a combination of passwords (for logging in and for working with finances). There is a Bind IP option: the site remembers the last IP from which you logged in.
The activities of US citizens on the platform were one of the main controversies surrounding this exchange. The project team has made it clear that it does not support US users and does not plan to change this due to a lack of clarity from the SEC, as well as other factors. There are no mentions or evidence that Gate.io is regulated or authorized by national regulators in any country.
This lack of regulatory approval may be a sign of the exchange’s unreliability for more conservative users.
At the same time, its well-organized security is considered a strong counterargument. Throughout its existence, the crypto exchange has managed to avoid hacks and hacker interference, and none of its users have lost money. A report conducted by ICOrating at the end of 2019 analyzed the security of the top 100 crypto exchanges. Gate.io ranked 53rd. Although it performed well in terms of protecting user funds, it had weak web security.
