What is BitMEX?

The BitMEX crypto exchange (Bitcoin Mercantile Exchange) is one of the world’s largest platforms for derivatives and perpetual contracts. It provides the opportunity to trade derivatives with leverage of up to 100x, with long and short trades available (on price increases or decreases).

We invite you to read a detailed review of the platform by experts. We will analyze in detail the most important and useful aspects of the BitMEX trading platform. We will examine all the nuances so that you have no difficulties with the registration process, trading, and earning money.

The BitMEX crypto exchange provides the opportunity to trade futures contracts on Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Cardano, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, EOS, and other popular coins. The most liquid and popular instrument is the XBTUSD perpetual contract.

Note: on the BitMEX exchange, all accounts (profits, trades, deposits) are kept in Bitcoin cryptocurrency, which is assigned the symbol XBT, rather than the usual BTC. You can open a position not only to buy an asset, but also to sell it, thus earning not only on a growing market, but also on a falling one. The maximum leverage for Bitcoin is 100x, and for other cryptocurrencies it is lower. Only takers pay commission, while makers receive additional payments.

The founders and developers of this project have implemented their planned ideas, creating a high-quality, albeit somewhat complex to master, but reliable cryptocurrency exchange. The vast majority of BitMEX’s clients are experienced crypto traders.

BitMEX’s management and technical team strive to optimize the exchange’s performance and create optimal working conditions for traders. The focus is on professional speculators, which means that inexperienced beginners have to seriously study the features, functionality, tools, and additional options.

The official BitMEX exchange website stands out for its abundance of useful data, detailed information about the project’s employees, reference materials, a blog, etc. It is very important that there are clearly presented memos on futures contracts, margin trading, and perpetual contracts. Detailed instructions on how to use the service are available.

In August 2021, BitMEX had a conflict with regulators due to insufficient attention to KYC/AML measures. The creators had to pay a fine and introduce mandatory user verification.

Trading on BitMEX

BitMEX is one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges. It offers traders a wide range of tools with detailed customizable settings for managing the trading process. The abundance of different values for each type of order allows you to plan the trading process down to the smallest detail, but beginners may have some problems understanding and effectively using the platform’s capabilities. In fact, it’s easier than it seems. In this review, we’ll tell you how to trade on BitMEX.

To make it easier for beginners to get used to the functionality, the developers have launched a demo version of the exchange at testnet.bitmex.com. The algorithm for working with this version of the platform is almost identical to the real one. The only difference is that trading is carried out with “virtual” money, which means you don’t have to worry about possible mistakes when placing orders.

Trading instruments:

  • Initially, the exchange specialized in derivatives (futures) and gained immense popularity among those who enjoy trading in this manner. However, spot trading functionality was added not long ago. In this review, we will primarily focus on futures, as they are more challenging for beginners to understand and have more nuances. The spot market is simple and intuitive, with only two types of orders and no leverage support.
  • BitMEX’s main trading asset is XBTUSD, which is a derivative financial instrument based on Bitcoin quotes. This means that when buying it, the user does not become the owner of BTC coins, but can play on the decline (sell this instrument), even if they do not have a previously purchased contract in their account. The second advantage is access to margin trading, or in other words, the use of leverage. Thanks to this opportunity, traders can open positions of a larger value, which opens up new opportunities to earn on changes in cryptocurrency rates, but also increases the risks. In addition, the XBTUSD contract is perpetual. This means that there is no need to time the trade to coincide with the expiration (completion) date. It is important to note that the quotes for this instrument almost completely coincide with the spot market (regular crypto exchanges where trades are made with the transfer of cryptocurrency between participants’ accounts).
  • In addition to XBTUSD, perpetual contracts are offered for many other popular cryptocurrencies: you can choose from ETHUSD, ETHUSDT, XRPUSD, BCHUSD, XBTUSDT, DOGEUSDT, LINKUSD, and so on — several dozen contracts.
  • The second type of transaction is cryptocurrency futures. This is also a derivative instrument, but unlike a perpetual contract, it has an expiration date, and quotes may differ significantly from the spot market. Examples: ETHU22, ADAU22.

BitMEX Calculator

A built-in calculator helps estimate margin and PnL.

Example:

  • Buy 1 BTC at $20,000, sell at $21,000.
  • Without leverage: profit = $1,000.
  • With 10x leverage: profit = $10,000, margin = 0.1 BTC.
  • With 100x leverage: profit = $100,000, margin = 0.01 BTC.

Despite some peculiarities, BitMEX is a classic exchange with margin trading capabilities. This means that you need to carefully consider the size of your order and the amount of leverage. To understand how much your account balance will change when you open a particular position, you can use the calculator (the icon under the trading pair selection).

With its help, you can find out in advance the margin size, the liquidation price for the order, and the amount of profit or loss for different volumes and opening and closing prices.

If you follow the classic principles of risk management, you need to adhere to the following rules to protect your funds from loss: the risk per order should not exceed 1-2% of the deposit, and the total risk for all open trades should remain within 3-5%. With this approach, even a long series of losing orders won’t wipe out your deposit: you’ll always have a chance to make up for your losses.

By following this rule and the info on trading on BitMEX from this guide, you can make a profit by using all the features of the trading platform to the max.
